Calabrese Green Sprouting

Heritage: Calabria, Italy

Brought to North America by immigrating Italian families in the late 1880’s, this variety has been cultivated in many a home garden over the past century.

Plants are tall, growing upright to 30” (45cm) in height. The rounded heads are dark green reaching up to 6” (15cm) in diameter with tightly packed buds. Once the main head is removed, the plant will continue to produce lovely 3″ (7cm) side shoots with tender florets well into autumn. When picked young, the stalk is also tasty and not overly fibrous. Flavour is mild, and sweet with just a touch of spice. Excellent choice for fresh eating or freezing. Grows best in cooler weather. Matures in 60-80 days. (265 seeds/gram)

Tips for Growing Bodacious Broccoli! Broccoli can either be started indoors and transplanted at 4-6 weeks, or direct seeded into the ground 1 week before the last frost date. If direct seeding, plant in rich, loose soil 1/2” (1cm) deep, spacing 12” (30cm) apart. Broccoli prefers full sun and rich soil. Broccoli will tolerate light frosts, but will bolt to seed as the weather heats-up. The best companion plants for Broccoli are; celery, dill, camomile, sage, potatoes and beets. Their growth is deterred if planted beside strawberries, tomatoes or pole beans. Broccoli usually germinates within 7-10 days (60-85ºF/16-29ºC).
