(Allium cepa)
The origin of the onion is still under debate with both botanists and archaeologists are undecided on its original geographical locale. Was it Egypt, Central Asia, Iran, or Pakistan? Archaeological findings suggest that the remains of onions were found in the tomb of King Tutankhamen. It is the Gauls, however, who believed that onions foretold of the weather. Shrek, on the other hand, equated the layered dimensions of the onion synonymous with the multi-layered personality of ogres. Regardless of its origins, onions are used extensively throughout almost every culinary culture of the world.
