(Pisum sativum)
The origin of the garden pea has been traced to the coastal villages of the Eastern Mediterranean c.7800 B.C. From there, peas traveled north-westward, arriving in Switzerland c.7000 B.C. It is, however, the long cool growing season of England, coupled with their love of the common garden pea, which led to the development of the many varieties available to us today. Mushy peas, fish & chips, and malt vinegar – what a great combination!
