(Tropaeolum majus)
The attractive and tasty Nasturtium is a native of Peru. Its’ name comes from the latin nasus tortus meaning “nose twisting” which is attributed to its somewhat peppery smell. All parts of the plant are edible, the flowers adding bright colour to salads, and the leaves a peppery snap to sandwiches. Nasturtiums are also a gardener’s best friend. When planted with squash they repel the squash bug, as well as white flies and other annoying pests. An annual self-seeding plant that is beautiful to look at, easy to care for, a helper in the garden, and a culinary delight!
