When mature, the kernels of this variety are as hard as flint-rock, hence the name. In modern times its primary use has been ornamental, however, in the past it was prized for its wonderful storage ability and resistance to pest intrusion when dried. Aside from corn wreaths and autumn décor it can be ground for cornmeal.
