Butterheads, also called Boston lettuce, are those wonderfully delicate textured small round balls of leaves, with a luxurious creamy blanched heart. True to the name, the leaves tend to melt in the mouth like butter. Unfortunately, they are almost always found bruised and tattered on the supermarket shelf – another great reason to grow your own! A popular variety in Northern Europe, they are relatively heat tolerant.
