As the name suggests, this variety of lettuce usually does not have any tendencies to “ball” or produce a head. Instead, leaves form a layer of rosettes around each other, producing a bouquet effect. Looseleaf lettuce is not as juicy as the other varieties, but offers much more variety in the way of colour and texture. Most varieties have the advantage of re-growth after cutting, ensuring an almost endless supply of salad. Many of the lettuces in this group are descendants of the seed that arrived in North America with the first settlers. Relatively heat tolerant and slower to bolt than other varieties.
