Pacific Beauty Mix (Annual)
Heritage: Southern Europe, Eastern Mediterranean
It is unclear when the Pacific Beauty mix was developed, however, there are seed catalogues offering it in North America as early as the 1950’s.
Gorgeous, long-stemmed plants can grow up to 24”(60cm) supporting a magnificent mix of double and single flowers in bright orange, sunshine yellow, and pale peach. Such Happy Flowers! A wonderful protector plant, it is also excellent as a cut flower, or dried and used as a substitute for saffron. Petals are edible and can be combined in a mesclun mix, or lettuce salad. It is also believed that the scent of Calendula repels mosquitos – who knew?! Hardy and semi-frost tolerant, we can still see our blooms well into December. Also adapt well to tolerating poor, clay soils. Bonus: Calendulas are self-seeding annuals that can return every spring! We highly recommend planting them everywhere in your vegetable and herb gardens. One of our Favourites! (120 seeds/g)
Protects Against Predators: Beetles, White Flies, Nematodes, Hornworms, Slugs, Aphids
Attracts Beneficials: Bees, Butterflies, Ladybugs, Lacewings, Hoverflies
Excellent Companion Plant for: Asparagus, Beans, Broccoli, Brussel Sprouts, Carrots, Cucumbers, Potatoes, Pumpkins, Tomatoes
Tips for Growing Cute Calendulas! Calendulas are a self-seeding annual that thrive in full sun and part-shade. They can be started in-doors, but we prefer to direct seed at the same time we are planting radishes and carrots. Scatter seeds on top of the earth or in row indentations. Cover with a light sprinkling of soil, no more than ¼” (6mm) deep, and gently tamp/press down so that the seeds are in contact with the earth. Lightly water, ensuring the soil remains moist, but not over-watered. Thin to 6” (15cm) apart for larger plants, or leave them closer together to grow in clumps of crazy cuteness! Calendula usually germinates within 7-14 days (65-75ºF/18-23ºC).
