Canadian Prairie Coneflower (Ratibida columnifera) (Perennial)
Heritage: Canadian Prairies, Ontario
A native of the Canadian Mid-West, however, this variety is not a true coneflower do to its oblong shaped head.
Hardy plants can grow up to 36” (90cm) high, producing a large extruded oblong head surrounded by colourful, relaxed petals. Flowers are either all bright yellow, or red-brown at the base developing into bright yellow at the ends. This beauty is not picky about soil, and will thrive in most garden conditions. Blooms all summer long and self-seeds for next season! (1,600 seeds/gram)
Attracts Beneficials: Bees, Butterflies, Hummingbirds
Excellent Companion Plant for: Black-Eyed Susan, Milkweed, other types of Coneflowers
Tips for Growing Courageous Coneflowers! Cornflowers are a self-seeding perennial that thrive in full sun and can tolerate some light shade. They can be started in-doors, but we prefer to direct seed in early spring, or late fall. Scatter seeds on top of the earth or in row indentations. Cover with a light sprinkling of soil, no more than 1/2” (1cm) deep, and gently tamp/press down so that the seeds are in contact with the earth. Lightly water, ensuring the soil remains moist, but not over-watered. Thin to 6” (15cm) apart for larger plants, or leave them closer together to grow in clumps of crazy cuteness! Coneflowers usually germinate within 10-21 days (65-75ºF/18-23ºC).
