Red Noodle (Burgundy/Red Stringless Trellis Bean)

Heritage: China

Originally thought to have come from Africa, this particular variety has a long history in southeast Asia since the 11th century, particularly within China.

These vining plants do best on a trellis, producing bright purple flowers that become amazing deep burgundy beans growing up to 20” (50cm) long! The vines can be quite prolific, rambling up to 12ft (3.6 meters). The young beans are stringless and tender if picked young, holding their colour well in a stir-fry or sauté. The dried beans are very similar in taste and texture to  southern cow peas. Very unusual, and extremely attractive. Produces well in most climates. Loves sun, and can withstand some drought. Sturdy trellis needed for support. Note: This plant emits a scent that attracts ants to act as their defenders against damaging pests. They have a symbiotic relationship, no need to worry or disturb them, they won’t harm the Red Noodle Beans. Matures in 70-80 days. (6 seeds/g)

Tips for Growing Bountiful Beans! When the soil has warmed, plant Bush Beans 1” (2.5cm) deep and 2-3” (5-7.5cm) apart.  Bush beans are excellent planting companions for; Celery, Cucumbers, Strawberries and Corn. However, do not plant them near Fennel or Onions. Similar to bush beans, Pole Beans or Vining Beans also require warm soil. Plant 2” (5cm) deep in hills around poles or corn stalks, against a fence support or around long branches tied together at the top to form teepees. Sow 4-6 beans per hill. For all varieties of beans, full warm sun and good air circulation between the plants is essential for growth, and disease resistance. Do not plant pole beans around Sunflowers – they have a mutual dislike for each other! Bush and pole beans usually germinate within 3-7 days (60-85ºF/16-29ºC).
