Montpellier (Green Stringless Gourmet Bush Bean)

Heritage: Montpellier, France

Montpellier is a city in the south of France close to the Mediterranean Sea. This particular variety of Flageolet has been carefully refined to also perform outstandingly as a Haricot Vert.

This slender, delicate bean produces long, stringless green pods up to 6” (15cm) in length. If you intend on consuming them as a French Filet (Haricot Vert), pick them no longer than 4″ (10cm), before the seeds begin to form. Whichever way you choose to consume them you will find them far superior to other fresh and/or dry beans! When fully mature, 6-8 beautiful white beans are in each lovely green pod. As a food staple they are indispensable in French cuisine and one of our absolute favourites! Rich baked-bean goodness when shelled. Tender, satin mouth feel when eaten fresh. I’m going to gush, and say they are also beautiful to look at! Good producer. Bush. Matures in 60-70 days. (6 seeds/g)

Tips for Growing Bountiful Beans! When the soil has warmed, plant Bush Beans 1” (2.5cm) deep and 2-3” (5-7.5cm) apart.  Bush beans are excellent planting companions for; Celery, Cucumbers, Strawberries and Corn. However, do not plant them near Fennel or Onions. Similar to bush beans, Pole Beans also require warm soil. Plant 2” (5cm) deep in hills around poles or corn stalks, against a fence support or around long branches tied together at the top to form teepees. Sow 4-6 beans per hill. For all varieties of beans, full warm sun and good air circulation between the plants is essential for growth, and disease resistance. Do not plant pole beans around Sunflowers – they have a mutual dislike for each other! Bush and pole beans usually germinate within 3-7 days (60-85ºF/16-29ºC).
