Poona Kheera (Yellow-Brown/Gold Slicing)
Heritage: Maharashtra, India
An ancient variety from India, only recently introduced to North American gardens.
Delicate, leafy vines produce smooth, light green fruit to 6” (15 cm) long, and 3” (8cm) in diameter. Snow white flesh is covered by a thin, tender skin that does not require peeling before eating. The skin will progress from light green – yellow – russet/gold – crackle brown. No need to worry, this cucumber can be harvested and eaten at any colour. It stays very crisp and flavourful at all stages and is just as tasty, if not more so, when it just starts to blush looking like a big potato! Can be used for slicing, grated into raita, infused in water, or juiced. A family favourite! Hardy and very prolific. Shows disease resistance. Matures in 50-60 days. (64 seeds/g)
Tips for Growing Captivating Cucumbers! Cucumbers love warm weather and need full sun for optimum production. It is best to start the seed indoors planted 1” (2.5cm) deep in small pots, 3-4 weeks before the last frost. When the soil has warmed transplant in the garden spacing at least 12” (30cm) apart preferably in hills (12” tall, 24” across). Alternatively, cucumbers can be direct-seeded in warm soil, or earlier with row covers, with equally good or better results. Ensure they are well-watered and mulched throughout the growing season. Good planting companions are; corn, beans, and sunflowers. Cucumbers usually germinate within 5-10 days (75-95ºF/24-35ºC).
