Cima Di Rapa Quarantina
Heritage: Southern Italy
Developed in the southern regions of Italy (Lazio, Campania, Puglia) and used as an accompaniment to small pasta dishes. Brought to North America by immigrating Italian families in the late 1920’s. The name Quarantina is a reference to their grow days to maturity.
Plants are not overly huge growing up to 10″ (25cm), with lots of big green notched leaves. Hidden amongst those leaves you will find lovely, delicate florets with beautiful plump green buds, and bright yellow flowers. So perfect! They are addictive – their fresh spicey attitude mellows into a sweet, hint of spice, fork full of flavour when sautéed with olive oil, garlic and a hint of sea salt. These are quick growing plants, so pick when young to enjoy. Best grown in cooler weather, although they did fairly well this summer with afternoon shade. One of our favourites! Matures in 35-45 days. (330 seeds/gram)
Tips for Growing Ridiculously Right Rapini! Rapini can either be started indoors and transplanted at 4-6 weeks, or direct seeded into the ground 1 week before the last frost date. If direct seeding, plant in rich, loose soil 1/2” (1cm) deep, spacing 12” (30cm) apart. Rapini prefers full sun and rich soil. Rapini will tolerate light frosts, but will bolt to seed as the weather heats-up. The best companion plants for Rapini are; celery, dill, camomile, sage, potatoes and beets. Their growth is deterred if planted beside strawberries, tomatoes or pole beans. Rapini usually germinates within 7-10 days (60-85ºF/16-29ºC).
