Osaka Purple

Heritage: Japan

Arriving in North America sometime in the mid 1700’s, this tasty Japanese heirloom has recently become standard fare in spicy mesclun mixes.

Plants can grow to 18” (45cm) tall, with thick, crinkled leaves over 10” (25cm) long and 4” (10cm) wide. Leaf colouring is a beautiful dark red/purple on the top with a light green underside and thick ribs. Colour intensifies as the temperature cools. Harvest young at 6” (15cm) for use in salads and as a different leafy green for sandwiches. It has what we would call a “gentle spice” when young, maturing to a sharp peppery heat at maturity. Larger leaves are excellent for stir-frying and steaming. The thick mature mid-ribs are also commonly pickled. Has a tendency to bolt in hot weather, but has a strong endurance for cooler temperatures growing well into early winter. Bonus: This is a cut-and-come-again variety! Matures in 50-70 days. (450 seeds/g)

Tips for Growing Marvelous Mustard! Direct seed outside once the soil begins to warm in a sunny location with well-drained soil. Plant 1/2” (1cm) deep, thinning to 12” (30cm) apart. Mustard grows fast, and is a cut-and-come-again green that you can start harvesting at 4 weeks. The most suitable companion plants for Mustard are; Celery, Corn, Dill, Peas, Onions. Mustard greens usually germinate within 5-7 days (75-85ºF/24-29ºC).
