Spanish Brocade (French, Semi-Double Blooms) (Annual/Self-Seeding)

Heritage: Mexico

Native to North and South America, Marigolds have been cultivated and revered in Mexican culture throughout history. We continue to grow our Spanish Brocade Marigolds from the original seed we obtained from a grower in New Mexico over 20 years ago.

Hardy, vivacious plants become bushes growing into 18”(45cm) high masses of semi-double maroon-red, gold, and bright orange flowers. Odour is strong, but not pungent, making for a pleasant gardening experience. Our personal favourite for pest control! A few summers ago we ran out of Brocades to plant alongside each of our ever-increasing number of tomato plants. Tomatoes companioned with a Brocade led a blissful bug free summer. However, tomatoes with an alternate variety of Marigold were visited by those awful green-horned tomato worms. We have also noticed Brocades performing surprisingly well against cucumber beetles. This hard-working beauty produces flowers early and all season long. We see them blooming in our gardens well into October. As with most flowers, be sure to remove dead flower heads to encourage season-long beauty! Bonus: Edible flower petals. (320 seeds/g)

Protects Against Predators: Beetles, White Flies, Hornworms, Thrips, Squash Bugs, Aphids, Moths, Potato Bugs, Nematodes, Mosquitos, and more!

Attracts Beneficials: Bees, Butterflies, Ladybugs, Lacewings, Hoverflies, Parasitic Mini-Wasps

Excellent Companion Plant for: Tomatoes, Basil, Broccoli, Cabbage, Cucumbers, Eggplant, Kale, Potatoes, Squash, Melons

Tips for Growing Majestic Marigolds!  Marigolds are a self-seeding annual that thrive in full sun all day. They can be started in-doors, but we prefer to direct seed once the soil temperature has warmed to 65ºF (18ºC). For best germination, plant seeds 1/2” (1cm) deep laying them flat (horizontal). Cover with soil, and gently tamp/press down so that the seeds are in contact with the earth. Lightly water, ensuring the soil remains moist, but not over-watered. Thin to 12” (30cm) apart. Remove dead flower heads to ensure a continuous supply of new buds. Marigolds usually germinate within 5-14 days (65-75ºF/18-23ºC).
