Bloomsdale Long Standing
Heritage: Pennsylvania, USA
Introduced to seed catalogues in the mid 1820’s by farmer David Ladreth, this heirloom is still one of the most popular spinach varieties around today.
Plants are energetic and quick to produce thick, crumpled, glossy dark green leaves. Flavour is mildly “green”, not turning bitter once the weather heats up. Will bolt to seed in hot weather, however the young seed stems and larger leaves stay tender even when fully matured. Deliciously fresh in salads, sandwiches, smoothies, sautéed, or any other way you want to use it! Excellent producer in most climates. No wonder it’s still so popular! Matures in 40-60 days. (65 seeds/gram)
Tips for Growing Splendid Spinach! Spinach is a daylight sensitive annual that thrives in cooler weather, so plant as soon as the soil can be worked. Sow seeds 1/2-1” (1-2.5cm) deep, thinning to 3” (7.5cm) apart. Spinach likes full sun, but requires some shade to keep from bolting to seed once the weather warms. Spinach is a suitable companion plant for strawberries. It usually germinates within 7-14 days (55-70ºF/13-21ºC). Note: Spinach does not germinate well in soil that is over 70ºF (21ºC)
