Moon & Stars

Heritage: Missouri, USA

Peter Henderson & Co first offered this legendary variety to home gardeners in the mid 1920’s. However, it wasn’t until the early 1980’s that Moon & Stars started to gain popularity.

Plants are gorgeous producing large dark green leaves with yellow spotted “stars”. The skin of the round to oval fruit boasts a stunning dark green background decorated with little yellow “stars” slightly larger than peas, and a few larger yellow “moons”. Flesh is delicate pink, a touch more grainy than other varieties, with lots of seeds. Unlike the super-sweet varieties, this southern beauty has an old-fashion on-the-farm flavour! Rich, satisfyingly sweet, but not over-done! Sizes vary, with fruit weighing up to 40 lbs (18kg). Note: Take care when handling, as the rind can be a bit brittle when fully mature. Wonderfully decorative and delicious! We have grown this variety for over 20 years and love it! Matures in 100-110 days. (8 seeds/g)

*Taste Quality* For most Watermelons, once picked they should be left to rest on your kitchen counter for a week before cutting. The absence from the vine signals the fruit to finish turning its carbohydrates into sugar!

Tips for Growing Wonderful Watermelons! Watermelons love heat and full sun. They can be started indoors at least 3 weeks prior to plant date. We prefer to direct seed, where they do equally well, and most times better if the season is long enough. Sow seed 3/4” (2cm) deep in warm, well fertilized soil. Plant 2-3 seedlings on mounds 36” (90cm) apart. Mulch heavily with straw so that the fruit will be cushioned against the soil. The most suitable companion plant for Watermelon is; potatoes. Who knew – potatoes have very few botanical friends! Watermelon seed usually germinates within 5-7 days (85-95ºF/29-35ºC).
