Painted Mountain (Multi-Coloured Flour/Decor Corn)
Heritage: Montana, USA
For over 30 years, Montana corn enthusiast, Dave Christensen worked with over 80 varieties of First Nations corn, particularly those of the Mandan. In the late 1970’s he introduce Painted Mountain, a genetically sound, open-pollinated flour corn with a high protein content, outstanding colour and flavour.
Plants grow to only 5’ (150cm) tall each producing 1-2 cobs 6-7” (15-18cm) in length. Kernels are an artwork of vivid gold, orange, red, purple, blue and pink, all tightly packed on 8 rowed ears. Outstanding to save as an ornamental, its flour is exceptional for use in cornbread and muffins. Bonus: Painted Mountain is also an excellent savory fresh eating corn if harvested in the ‘milk-stage’ when the kernels are still a pale mix of yellows and whites. Flavour is rich and velvety smooth, with just a touch of sweetness. Able to withstand strong winds, cool soils, near freezing night temperatures, drought, and excessive heat this variety is suitable for almost all gardening climates. It is said to be able to grow and produce in conditions that no other corn can tolerate. Who doesn’t love that! One of our favourite corns! Matures in 70-90 days depending on climate. (4 seeds/g)
Tips for Growing Scrumptious Corn! Corn is wind pollinated and does best when planted in block formation as opposed to single rows. It can be planted early in spring in a sunny location. Sow seeds 1-2” (2.5-5cm) deep, 12-14” (30-35cm) apart in rows. Alternatively, traditional Native agriculture suggests planting 3-5 seeds per mound, and adding pole beans around the sprouting corn once it has emerged. Keep well watered and fertilized. Applying a layer of mulch around the plants will help keep the soil moist and avoid weeding. Excellent planting companions for Corn are; pole beans, cucumbers, pumpkins, and squash. Corn usually germinates within 5-10 days (65-85ºF/18-29ºC).
