Walla Walla Sweet
Heritage: Island of Corsica (Italy/France), Washington State, USA
Originally an Italian variety cultivated on the Island of Corsica (became a territory of France in 1755 to pay-off Italy’s debt to France). In the late 1880’s soldier P.Pieri immigrated to Walla Walla Valley in Washington State (USA) bringing with him seeds for this variety. He continued to grow and develop the traits that this onion is now so famous for. (BTW – Napoleon Bonaparte’s birthplace was the island of Corsica!)
Large, globe-shaped bulbs are covered in a light brown skin. Flesh is bright white, super-juicy and exceptionally mild. Some say the sweetness compares with Texas Supersweet and Vidalia. These are a beautiful onion, easy to grow and a pleasure to eat, even raw. A cold hearty variety that can be started very early in the spring, or even over-wintered in milder climates. Best harvested by hand to avoid damage to the delicious bulb. Will be at its sweetest in low-sulfur soils. Does not store as well as other varieties, but still one of our fresh-eating Favourites! Matures in 110-150 days. (400 seeds/g)
Tips for Growing Opulent Onions! Onions generally prefer cooler temperatures, so start outdoors early as soon as the soil can be worked. Disperse seed on the surface of the ground, cover lightly with soil, and gently tamp down. Onions prefer full sun with good ventilation and drainage. Thin depending on the size, and variety of the Onion being cultivated. Ensure soil is hilled-up around the base of the onion to ensure white bulbs. Suitable companion plants for Onions are; cabbage, beets, tomatoes, carrots, and lettuce. Onions usually germinate within 10-14 days (65-80ºF/18-26ºC).
