Tips for Growing Outstanding Okra! Okra is a tropical plant that loves heat and full sun. It is also a chameleon of sorts, readily adapting to different growing conditions, even within the same garden. Don’t be surprised if plants of the same variety are taller or shorter than each other. When the weather has sufficiently warmed (around the same time beans are planted), direct sow seeds ½”-1” (1-2.5cm) deep. Thin to 12” (30 cm) apart. The most suitable companion plants for Okra are; peppers and eggplant. Okra usually germinates within 10-21 days (70-95ºF/21-35ºC).
