Ring of Fire (Annual)
Heritage: Southern California, U.S.A
This unusual variety was developed by Benary Seeds in the late 1990’s, and was an All-American Selection Winner in 2001. It takes a little longer to mature than other types of Sunflowers, but is so wonderfully coloured it’s well worth the wait!
Sturdy stalks grow up to 4-5ft (120-150cm) in height, producing branching flowers up to 6” (15cm) in diameter. The velvety, chocolate brown centre is surrounded by petals which begin at the base as a dark, firey magenta red, and work their way to bright golden yellow at the tips. This lovely multi-toned, ombré effect gives the flower a superbly striking appearance! Holds well as a cut flower. (Matures in 100-120 days) (50 seeds/g)
Protects Against Predators: Squash Bugs, Aphids, White Flies, Caterpillars, Borers, Leafhoppers
Attracts Beneficials: Bees, Butterflies, Ladybugs, Lacewings, Hoverflies, Hummingbirds
Excellent Companion Plant for: Grapes, Raspberries, Strawberries, Basil, Rosemary, Sage, Corn, Tomatoes, Cucumber, Squash, Peppers, Carrots
Do Not Plant Near: Broccoli, Cauliflower, Cabbage, Pole Beans, Lettuce, Spinach, Kale
Tips for Growing Sensuous Sunflowers! Sunflowers are an annual that thrives in full-day sun and loose, well-drained soils for deep rooting. They can be started in-doors, but we prefer to direct seed after the danger of frost has passed, and the soil has warmed to at least (65ºF/18ºC). Plant seeds 1” (2.5cm) deep in an area where there is support for excessive winds. Cover with soil, and gently tamp/press down so that the seeds are in contact with the earth. Lightly water, ensuring the soil remains moist, but not over-watered. Thin to 6” (15cm) apart. Sunflowers usually germinate within 7-10 days (65-85ºF/18-29ºC).
