Agrestal’s Provençal Mesculin Mix!

This is a traditional French Provence mix of luscious Lettuce and glorious Greens similar to those found in the farmer’s markets in Nice, France. We have lovingly combined our delicate Oak-Leaf Lettuces with Chervil, Rocket (Arugula), Endive, Cress and Mâche. Plant often and harvest the tender young leaves to enjoy as a fresh salad, or elevate a sandwich, any sandwich! The satiny texture, and mix of super-fresh green goodness is hard to resist. To make your mix even more authentic, add young dandelion greens that happen to make their way into your garden. Très Magnifique! Matures in 20-30 days.
Tips for Growing Magnificent Mesculin! Direct sow outdoors once the ground has thawed and begun to warm. Evenly distribute seed on top of the soil, or create small indentations for rows. Cover with a light sprinkle of soil no more than ¼” (5mm) deep. Gently tamp-down so that the seed connects with the earth. Lightly water to help the tiny seeds settle. Keep moist, but not overwatered. Thin the young plants to 4” (10cm) apart, or let them grow as is. If you want a continuous supply, re-plant every 2-3 weeks. Leaves should be harvested and eaten quite young from the outside of the plant first, leaving the interior to continue producing. For the best tasting young leaves, plant early in the spring. Hot summer days can cause the leaves to become extremely spicy, even bitter. Be sure to provide shade on hot afternoons. Germination can take 5-14 days (55-80ºF/13-27ºC).
