Red Iceberg
Heritage: France (Crisphead Batavia) – Pennsylvania, USA (Burpee & Co)
Developed by W. Atlee Burpee in the mid 1890’s using parent plants of French origin (Crisphead Batavia). Ice Queen aka “Iceberg” lettuce was named to represent not only it’s firm, white interior, but also its’ method of shipment on-ice to arrive at its’ final destination still fresh and edible.
Unusual for a crisphead, this Red Iceberg boasts beauty as well as flavour! Heads are medium in size and leaves are more loose and sprawling, than the traditional iceberg variety. Outer leaves are a magnificent combination of green and burgundy, with green and red radiating all the way to the centre. Juicy and full of crunch, a good summer garden variety. A must try for crisphead salad lovers! Does well in most climates. Matures in 80-85 days. (1,000 seeds/g)
Bonus: Red Iceberg can be harvested in a few different ways (1) cutting at ground level for a single head when mature, (2) cut and leave 2″ for cut-and-come-again re-growth at any stage or, (3) for a continuous supply, harvest only the outer leaves as they begin to mature!
Tips for Growing Luscious Lettuce! Lettuce is a cool weather crop, enjoying full sun until the weather heats up, then it will require some shade in the afternoon. We have the best results direct seeding as soon as the ground warms in early spring. Sprinkle seed sparingly on top of the earth. Cover with a very light sprinkling of lose soil. Gently tamp/press soil down so that the seeds are in contact with the earth. Lightly water, thinning to 6” (15cm) apart. For the most flavourful, sweet and crisp lettuce, be sure to harvest early in the morning. The best companion plants for Lettuce are; onions, radishes, carrots, strawberries, and cucumbers. Lettuce usually germinates within 3-10 days (60-70ºF/16-21ºC). Be aware, if temperatures exceed 80ºF/27ºC, seed may fail to germinate at all!
