Batavian Broadleaved

Heritage: Belgium

Introduced to North America In the late 1860’s.

Round thick heads grow to 16” (40cm) in diameter, producing large, broad, leaves up to 10” (25cm) tall. Leaves have a creative twist to their appearance when fully mature. The heart is well-filled and tightly packed, developing a well-blanched creamy-white-yellow heart. Flavour is slightly bitter, but strangely addictive! Easy to grow in cooler climates. Warmer climates need to ensure there is sufficient shade. Note: The leaves are tightly packed, so be sure to water at ground level. Matures in 60-80 days. (760 seeds/g)

Tips for Growing Enticing Endive! Direct seed outdoors early in the spring planting 1/4” (0.5cm) deep. Thin to 10-12” (25-30cm) apart. Plants appreciate some full sun, but shun the heat and will need shade during hot summer days. The most suitable companion plants for Endive are; sage, mustard, carrots, cucumbers. Do not plant near garlic, or onions. Endive usually germinates within 10-14 days (60-70ºF/15-21ºC).
