Bull’s Blood

Heritage: Netherlands

Originally from the old French lineage Crapaudine, Bull’s Blood was developed in the mid 1840’s by farmer Kees Sahin of the Netherlands.

This beet produces an exceptional display of crisp super-dark purple foliage with colour and taste intensifying as it grows. Could be used in place of Radicchio – sweeter in taste, plus faster and easier to grow. Baby leaf tops can be harvested as early as 35 days for excellent salad cuttings. The root is not a beauty to look at but still retains the traditional red beet globe shape with a dark red interior and earthy sweetness. The root is so dramatically red, that its juice is prized in Sweden for red food colouring. Excellent choice for salad mixes and sprouting. Very hardy, flourishing in both cool and warm growing conditions. One of our favourites! Matures in 35-60 days. (70 seeds/g)

Tips for Growing Bodacious Beets! When the soil has slightly warmed sow seeds ½” (1cm) deep. Space them 1” (2.5cm) apart if planting solely for use of their greens, and 3” (7.5cm) apart if your preference is for use of the root. Beets enjoy a location providing full sun, and well drained soil. Adapted to growing in cooler conditions, they excel in spring and late summer when the days are warm, and the nights cool. The most suitable companion plants for Beets are: bush beans, onions, and lettuce. Beware: pole beans and beets do not get along! Beets usually germinate within 5-10 days (55-80ºF/13-27ºC).
