Tatsoi (Brassica rapa var. rosularis)
Heritage: China
First introduced to North American in the early 1930’s.
This multi-functional green is a member of the mustard family, and an essential ingredient to many oriental dishes. Juicy, white stems produce beautiful dark green spoon shape leaves in compact rosettes that are a cut-and-come-back variety! Almost sweet to the taste and always reliable, rarely bitter. Versatile for fresh mesclun cutting when young, and soups or stir-fry when mature. Very cold hardy, we have even been able to grow these through frost season and dig out mature plants from under the snow for fresh winter eating. Easy to grow in cooler climates, require shade in hotter areas. Matures in 30-40 days. (550 seeds/g)
Tips for Growing Tasty Tatsoi! Direct seed outside in early Spring, once the soil has thawed and begins to warm. Tatsoi does best with partial sun and nutrient rich soil. They do not like hot climates, so ensure shade is available during hot summer days. Plant seeds no more than 1/2” (1cm) deep, lightly covering with a sprinkle of soil. Thin to 5-8” (12-20cm) apart so the round rosettes have room to spread. The most suitable companion plants for Tatsoi are; Dill, Garlic, Peas, Onions, Cabbage. Tatsoi usually germinates within 5-10 days (65-80ºF/18-26ºC).
