French D’Avignon

Heritage: France

Originally cultivated in the Provençal Cotê d’Azur region of Southern France. Introduced to North America in the late 1870’s.

This rare gourmet variety produces a long, very slender cylindrical tapered root growing up to 4” (10cm). The majority of the radish is bright rose in colour with a milky white tip. Flesh is delicate and crisp. Flavourful and extremely mild with some sweetness and just a hint of heat. Traditionally sliced very thin and placed in a finger sandwich. Green tops are also tasty as a steamed vegetable. This is one of the nicest radishes we have tried. One of our Favourites! Matures in 25-30 days. (115 seeds/g)

Tips for Growing Radiant Radishes! Radishes are one of the most versatile vegetables to grow. Forgiving of almost all soil types, they do need sun and can be planted as soon as the ground can be worked. Sow seeds 1/2” (1cm) deep and thin to 2” (5cm) apart. Provide ample water so that they grow quickly and avoid becoming corky. Radishes are excellent companion plants with squash, beans, cucumbers, melons, carrots, parsnips, peas, and spinach. They also have a particularly good relationship with lettuce. Do not plant radishes near hyssop. Radishes usually germinates within 4-7 days (45-85ºF/7-30ºC)
