Boothby’s Blonde (Yellow Slicing/Pickling)

Heritage: Livermoore, Maine, USA

This heirloom variety has been maintained by generations of the Boothby family of Maine. It’s popularity started to spread in the late 1990’s as seeds were shared among garden enthusiasts.

Plants are relatively compact with short vines, producing stocky oval fruits up to 8” (20cm) in length. The thin skin is a pale green/light yellow at first  with slight warts, gradually progressing to a smooth cream colour at maturity. The flesh and robust seed cavity are a bright mint green, with a fresh, cool snap to the taste. Excellent for eating straight from the vine when they reach 4” (10cm) long. But here is our secret – pick them when really small, 2” (5cm) and you will have the ultimate gourmet white cornichons for pickling! They also make really tasty bread & butter pickles. Very versatile variety. One of our favourites! Matures in 60-70 days. (28 seeds/g)

Tips for Growing Captivating Cucumbers! Cucumbers love warm weather and need full sun for optimum production. It is best to start the seed indoors planted 1” (2.5cm) deep in small pots, 3-4 weeks before the last frost. When the soil has warmed transplant in the garden spacing at least 12” (30cm) apart preferably in hills (12” tall, 24” across). Alternatively, cucumbers can be direct-seeded in warm soil, or earlier with row covers, with equally good or better results. Ensure they are well-watered and mulched throughout the growing season. Good planting companions are; corn, beans, and sunflowers. Cucumbers usually germinate within 5-10 days (75-95ºF/24-35ºC).
