Mandurian (Cucumis melo) (Round Green Slicing)
Heritage: Southern Italy
Traveling from Asia long ago, this interesting little cucumber was developed into a Southern Italian delicacy.
Plants are short, squat and do not usually vine. The fruit produced is round and light green in colour, developing dark green variegated skin as they age. Flesh is deliciously crisp, juicy, and sweet! Best eaten when no bigger than the size of a baseball. However, if left to grow a little larger they make an interesting Melon-type accompaniment to prosciutto! This cucumber is actually a melon – hence, its classification within the botanical family of Cucumis. Note: This little sweetie has a relatively large seed cavity for its’ size but well worth growing. Our family’s favourite specialty cucumber! Matures in 60-70 days. (32 seeds/g)
Tips for Growing Captivating Cucumbers! Cucumbers love warm weather and need full sun for optimum production. It is best to start the seed indoors planted 1” (2.5cm) deep in small pots, 3-4 weeks before the last frost. When the soil has warmed transplant in the garden spacing at least 12” (30cm) apart preferably in hills (12” tall, 24” across). Alternatively, cucumbers can be direct-seeded in warm soil, or earlier with row covers, with equally good or better results. Ensure they are well-watered and mulched throughout the growing season. Good planting companions are; corn, beans, and sunflowers. Cucumbers usually germinate within 5-10 days (75-95ºF/24-35ºC).
