Watermelon

Heritage: China

Originating from the Beijing region of Northern China, this variety was traditionally consumed as a fruit. Arrival to North America is believed to have been sometime in the late 1800’s. Chefs value its bright colour and size for carving large garnishes. Note: This is a heirloom variety of the Chinese Daikon radish.

Robust, round-oblong roots grow to 3” (7.5cm) in diameter. Skin is a background of white with a tinge of bright lime green. Cut it open and you will be greeted with dazzling bright pink flesh, just like a watermelon! . Flavour is a mild pepper crunch, with a splatter of sweetness. Excellent radish for fall harvesting, becoming more mild and tasty as it matures. Very versatile eating variety. Matures in 50-60 days. (110 seeds/g)

Tips for Growing Radiant Radishes! Radishes are one of the most versatile vegetables to grow. Forgiving of almost all soil types, they do need sun and can be planted as soon as the ground can be worked. Sow seeds 1/2” (1cm) deep and thin to 2” (5cm) apart. Provide ample water so that they grow quickly and avoid becoming corky. Radishes are excellent companion plants with squash, beans, cucumbers, melons, carrots, parsnips, peas, and spinach. They also have a particularly good relationship with lettuce. Do not plant radishes near hyssop. Radishes usually germinates within 4-7 days (45-85ºF/7-30ºC)
