Marketmore 76 (Green, Fresh-Slicing)

Heritage: Ithaca, New York, USA

Developed by Dr. Henry Munger at Cornell University in 1968. The first generation was Marketmore 70.

Vigorous vines consistently produce uniform 8-9” (20-23cm) cucumbers throughout the summer, almost to the point where you want to say STOP! How many cucumbers can you feed a child in a day?!? The fruit is dark green in colour with white spines and crisp, sweet, mild flesh. A family favourite, some of my relatives have commented that it is the best cucumber they have ever tasted, sublime even! Good producer in cooler climates and can also tolerate excessive heat. Only a few “yellow bellies” at maturity. Also makes a good pickler when young! Shows excellent disease resistance. Matures in 60-70 days. (62 seeds/g)

Tips for Growing Captivating Cucumbers! Cucumbers love warm weather and need full sun for optimum production. It is best to start the seed indoors planted 1” (2.5cm) deep in small pots, 3-4 weeks before the last frost. When the soil has warmed transplant in the garden spacing at least 12” (30cm) apart preferably in hills (12” tall, 24” across). Alternatively, cucumbers can be direct-seeded in warm soil, or earlier with row covers, with equally good or better results. Ensure they are well-watered and mulched throughout the growing season. Good planting companions are; corn, beans, and sunflowers. Cucumbers usually germinate within 5-10 days (75-95ºF/24-35ºC).
