White Icicle

Heritage: England

Recorded cultivation and selection in British medicinal gardens in the mid 1500’s. First appearance in North America was in the late 1880’s, holding minimal attraction until the early 2000’s when they were offered in Seed Catalogues as a novelty vegetable. Note: This variety is not a daikon radish, although it looks similar in appearance.

Elegant, long tapered roots can grow up to 6” (15cm) long and 1” (2.5cm) in diameter. Bright snowy-white inside and out with a succulent, crisp texture when eaten fresh. Flavour is much milder than red radishes, with just a touch of earthy zest, perhaps too bland for some palates. For a more spicey mouthful, pick when young – they get milder with maturity. Lovely when sautéed, becoming sweeter and richer. Remains tender over an extended period without pith. Can be planted closer together than round radishes. Also produces leafy greens. Matures in 25-30 days. Good tolerance to heat. (145 seeds/g)

Tips for Growing Radiant Radishes! Radishes are one of the most versatile vegetables to grow. Forgiving of almost all soil types, they do need sun and can be planted as soon as the ground can be worked. Sow seeds 1/2” (1cm) deep and thin to 2” (5cm) apart. Provide ample water so that they grow quickly and avoid becoming corky. Radishes are excellent companion plants with squash, beans, cucumbers, melons, carrots, parsnips, peas, and spinach. They also have a particularly good relationship with lettuce. Do not plant radishes near hyssop. Radishes usually germinates within 4-7 days (45-85ºF/7-30ºC)
