Golden Sweet (Snow Pea = edible Pod)
Heritage: India
This unusual variety is relatively new to North America, believed to have arrived sometime in the early 1970’s.
Plants can get large, growing up to 8’ (240cm) tall, producing masses of beautiful bi-colour purple flowers. The abundant, bright lemon-yellow pods are produced as singles, or in pairs, each growing 3” (7.5cm) long. They have a well-balanced sweetness and snap, but are delicate at the same time. Best eaten when pods are young. At full maturity they grow strings and can become bitter. Bonus: If left to mature, the peas are fantastic when dried and used in soup. Heavy producer that grows really well in most weather conditions. Shows disease resistance. Matures in 65-75 days. (5 seeds/g)
Tips for Growing Precious Peas! Peas are quite versatile tolerating a wide range of temperatures including light frosts. They are best suited to top production in the cooler weather of early Spring, or Autumn. Peas can be planted in both seasons to get a double crop in one season. As soon as the ground can be worked, plant seed 1” (2.5cm) deep and 2” (5cm) apart. Peas have no problem with crowding, but must have trellis or fence support. Full sun and moisture are essential. The most suitable companion plants for Peas are; corn, carrots, radishes, mustard and cucumbers. Do not plant near onions or garlic. Peas usually germinate within 5-7 days (50-75ºF/10-24ºC)
