Astro Arugula (Eruca sativa)

Heritage: Italy

A commercial variety with a long history. Over the years it has been developed to have a “calmer” flavour for North American taste-buds.

Oval, slightly ridged leaves are dark green and delicious! This variety lacks the intense bitterness found in a lot of Arugulas. Flavour is delicate, lightly spiced, nutty, almost almond-like with just a touch of sweetness. It can become quite addictive! Best picked when young and tender, although it holds up really well with heat. Best eaten raw, on top of everything! Or very lightly sautéed with fresh garlic and olive oil. Matures in 30-40 days. (600 seeds/g)

Tips for Growing Awesome Arugula! Direct sow outdoors once the ground has thawed by evenly distributing seed on top of the soil, or by creating small indentations for rows. Cover with a light sprinkle of soil, or compost, no more than ¼” (5mm) deep. Gently tamp-down. Lightly water to help the tiny seeds settle. You can either let the young plants grow as sprinkled, or thin them to 4” (10cm) apart in rows. If you want a continuous supply, re-plant every 2-3 weeks. Leaves should be harvested and eaten quite young from the outside of the plant first, leaving the interior to continue producing. For the best tasting Arugula, plant early in the spring. Hot summer days can cause the leaves to become extremely spicy, even bitter. The most suitable companion plants for Arugula are; Dill, Mint, Coriander, Beans, Carrots. Arugula usually germinates within 5-7 days (55-80ºF/13-27ºC).
