Sakata’s Sweet

Heritage: Japan

An historical Asian variety, it was first introduced to seed catalogues in the early 1900’s by the Sakata Seed Co., of Yokohama, Japan. This is a traditional “pocket melon” variety. “Pocket melons” refer to smaller, highly aromatic varieties that became popular in the Victorian era. They were carried in the pocket of an individual hoping that the lovely aroma would overcome their unpleasant body odor.

Delicate vines produce lovely smooth, round fruits up to 3.5” (9cm) in diameter. Thin, edible skin is pale yellow-green at maturity, delicate and tender. The juicy flesh is light mint green, crisp, and very sweet! Highly fragrant, with a refreshing scent of flowers and sweet summer days! Grows on a trellis with great success. A true botanical treasure to enjoy. Matures in 80-90 days. (120 seeds/g)

*Taste Quality* For most Melons, once picked they should be left to rest on your kitchen counter for a week before cutting. The absence from the vine signals the fruit to finish turning its carbohydrates into sugar!

Tips for Growing Marvelous Melons! Melons love heat and full sun. It is best to start indoors at least 4 weeks prior to plant date. Alternatively, melons can also be direct seeded if the season is long enough. Sow seed 1/2” (1cm) deep in warm, well fertilized soil. Plant 2-3 seedlings in mounds 24” (60cm) apart. Mulch heavily with straw so that the fruit will be cushioned against the soil. The most suitable companion plants for Melons are; corn, sunflowers, and morning glory. Do not plant near potatoes. Melons usually germinate within 5-7 days (80-90ºF/27-32ºC).
