Red Russian (Brassica napus)

Heritage: Siberia (east of the Ural Mountains), Russia

It is believed this variety of kale arrived in Canada during the mid 1880’s with Russian traders.

The 24-36” (60-90cm) plants produces a mass of beautiful red-green leaves, accented by dark purple veins that become fully vibrant in autumn weather. The leaves are frilled and quite wavy, resembling an oak leaf. Wonderfully tender, with an excellent flavour it needs to be used soon after it is picked to avoid wilting. One of the sweeter, more attractive kales that is gentle on the taste-buds. Leaves blanch to dark green when steamed. Just like any Kale, remember to cut-out the thick middle rib before consuming. Hardy into the winter months. Matures in 50-60 days. (400 seeds/g)

Tips for Growing Tasty Kale! Direct seed outdoors once the ground has thawed to 1/2” (1cm), deep, thinning to 12” (30cm) apart. Plant in full sun in climates with cooler summers. Kale will need afternoon shade in hot summer climates or it will droop and fade. The quicker Kale grows, the more robust the flavour. Frost tolerant, a light freeze will also improve flavour and colour, so plant it in a place you want it to stay. It will be thriving well into the winter months. The most suitable companion plants for Kale are; cabbage, potatoes, and bush beans. Kale usually germinates within 5-10 days (65-85ºF/18-29ºC).
