Rat’s Tail (Raphanus caudatus)

Heritage: Thailand & Southeast Asia

Originating in Southeast Asia, this variety made its way to India where it was further refined until finally reaching North America in the mid 1860’s. It first appeared in Gregory’s Massachusetts seed catalogue a few years later.

Plants can grow to a mighty 5’ (150cm), producing copious flowers which provide the added benefit of attracting bees and butterflies. From these flowers grow slender, bright green-purple elongated pods up to 10-12” (25-30cm) in length. BTW they are far more attractive than a rat’s tail! Picked when young and tender, the pods are a delightful delicacy for use in salads, stir-fries, and all other matters of cuisine. Crisp, with a snap, the flavour is fresh and zingy, spicey even! Don’t even bother to harvest the root – it is the wonderful pods which make this radish so special. Easy to grow, but needs lots of space. Matures in 45-50 days. (160 seeds/g)

Tips for Growing Radiant Radishes! Radishes are one of the most versatile vegetables to grow. Forgiving of almost all soil types, they do need sun and can be planted as soon as the ground can be worked. Sow seeds 1/2” (1cm) deep and thin to 2” (5cm) apart. Provide ample water so that they grow quickly and avoid becoming corky. Radishes are excellent companion plants with squash, beans, cucumbers, melons, carrots, parsnips, peas, and spinach. They also have a particularly good relationship with lettuce. Do not plant radishes near hyssop. Radishes usually germinates within 4-7 days (45-85ºF/7-30ºC)
