Hulless Baby Rice (White Popping Corn)

Heritage: Wisconsin, USA

An older variety found growing on Wisconsin farms. Documented as far-back as the late1890’s.

Plants grow from to 5ft-7ft (210cm), each producing 2-3 well-formed cobs up to 6” (15cm) in length. Kernels are small and white, popping up to fluffy medium sized, bright snow-white. Popcorn is crisp, with a very thin or non-existent hull. In other words, none of those hard kernel pieces to mess around with your teeth! Fantastic corn flavour (even without butter) and easy to pop. Bonus: Similar to other Japanese hulless types, if you harvest the cobs after the first week of germination, you can use them for eating in a stir-fried, or pickled! Well suited to shorter growing seasons. Matures in 80-100 days. One of our favourites! Good producer. (8 seeds/g)

Tips for Growing Scrumptious Corn! Corn is wind pollinated and does best when planted in block formation as opposed to single rows. It can be planted early in spring in a sunny location. Sow seeds 1-2” (2.5-5cm) deep, 12-14” (30-35cm) apart in rows. Alternatively, traditional Native agriculture suggests planting 3-5 seeds per mound, and adding pole beans around the sprouting corn once it has emerged. Keep well watered and fertilized. Applying a layer of mulch around the plants will help keep the soil moist and avoid weeding. Excellent planting companions for Corn are; pole beans, cucumbers, pumpkins, and squash. Corn usually germinates within 5-10 days (65-85ºF/18-29ºC).
