Golden Delight

Heritage: Pennsylvania, USA

Golden coloured beets were believed to have been growing in North America since the mid 1700’s. It wasn’t until the late 1870’s that Burpee Seeds developed an improved version of the original golden beet and offered it in their Seed Catalogue.

Globe shaped roots have brilliant orange skin, and deep golden yellow flesh full of texture and sweetness that stays mild even to full maturity. What a delight! Colour remains true when roasted and does not bleed like red beets. Their gloriously glossy green tops have been favoured throughout history and can be eaten steamed or used in salads. Quick and easy to grow, but does not compete well with weeds. Note: Can sometimes be a finicky germinator. Matures in 50-55 days. (110 seeds/g)

Tips for Growing Bodacious Beets! When the soil has slightly warmed sow seeds ½” (1cm) deep. Space them 1” (2.5cm) apart if planting solely for use of their greens, and 3” (7.5cm) apart if your preference is for use of the root. Beets enjoy a location providing full sun, and well drained soil. Adapted to growing in cooler conditions, they excel in spring and late summer when the days are warm, and the nights cool. The most suitable companion plants for Beets are: bush beans, onions, and lettuce. Beware: pole beans and beets do not get along! Beets usually germinate within 5-10 days (55-80ºF/13-27ºC).
