Mammoth Melting Sugar (Snow Pea = edible Pod)

Heritage: Northern States, USA

Recorded growing in Northern gardens in the late 1890’s, this variety first appeared in North American seed catalogues in the early 1900’s.

Firm support is needed for tall plants growing up to 8’ (2.4m) if well fertilized. The tender light-green pods are huge, growing up to 5” (12.5cm). They have a lovely sweet “melt in your mouth” flavour that sets them apart from other edible-podded peas. Pods are crisp and juicy when eaten fresh. They can also be sautéed or cooked and eaten similar to green beans. The dry seed is also well-suited for sprouting. Plants are hardy and vigorous, producing pods over a long period. High-yielding in most climates, but prefers cooler weather for best results. Shows disease resistance. Matures in 75-85 days. (5 seeds/g)

Tips for Growing Precious Peas! Peas are quite versatile tolerating a wide range of temperatures including light frosts. They are best suited to top production in the cooler weather of early Spring, or Autumn. Peas can be planted in both seasons to get a double crop in one season. As soon as the ground can be worked, plant seed 1” (2.5cm) deep and 2” (5cm) apart. Peas have no problem with crowding, but must have trellis or fence support. Full sun and moisture are essential. The most suitable companion plants for Peas are; corn, carrots, radishes, mustard and cucumbers. Do not plant near onions or garlic. Peas usually germinate within 5-7 days (50-75ºF/10-24ºC)
