Pennsylvania Dutch Butter (White Popping Corn)

Heritage: Germany, Pennsylvania USA

A family heirloom among the Pennsylvania Dutch (descendants of German-speaking peoples who first came to North American in the 1680’s). Traditional garden seed was brought from the home country and acclimated to North American growing conditions. The earliest record of this variety of corn in an Amish farm garden was in the mid-1800’s.

Vigorous plants grow up to 8’ (240cm) tall, each producing 2-3 cobs up to 6” (15cm) long. The robust creamy-white kernels pop-up tender, and delicious, even without butter! Although … a little butter never hurts 🙂 The popped kernels even have ridged edges to help absorb any toppings. Easy to grow in poor soils, shows drought resistance. Matures in 100-110 days. (8 seeds/g)

Tips for Growing Scrumptious Corn! Corn is wind pollinated and does best when planted in block formation as opposed to single rows. It can be planted early in spring in a sunny location. Sow seeds 1-2” (2.5-5cm) deep, 12-14” (30-35cm) apart in rows. Alternatively, traditional Native agriculture suggests planting 3-5 seeds per mound, and adding pole beans around the sprouting corn once it has emerged. Keep well watered and fertilized. Applying a layer of mulch around the plants will help keep the soil moist and avoid weeding. Excellent planting companions for Corn are; pole beans, cucumbers, pumpkins, and squash. Corn usually germinates within 5-10 days (65-85ºF/18-29ºC).
