Santo Cilantro/Coriander (Annual)

Heritage: Washington State, USA

Cilantro/Coriander originated in the ancient Mediterranean. It is said to have arrived in North America with settlers in the mid-1600’s. However, it wasn’t until the late 1920’s that “Santo” Coriander was developed by the Alf Christianson Seed Company to produce a stronger tasting, bolt resistant variety.

Fast growing, and remarkably slow to bolt in hot weather, this strain of Coriander produces broad stalks up to 24″(60cm) tall with lush green leaves for cutting. The fresh flavour is strong and distinct, not getting lost in spicy cuisine. The dried coriander seeds smell divine when ground! Ideal for use in all varieties of cuisine. Huge attraction for bees when in bloom. Note: You may want to trellis when the flowers are setting seed. (90 seeds/g)

Tips for Growing Gorgeous Cilantro!  Cilantro thrives best in rich, fertile soil with sun in the morning and cool shade during hot afternoons. Cilantro has some tolerance to cooler weather and can be planted as early as late April. For the most intensely flavoured Cilantro plant before mid-May! Seed can be sprinkled, or individually planted up to 1cm deep. Cover with soil no more than ¼” (6mm) deep and gently tamp/press down so that the seeds are in contact with the earth. Lightly water, ensuring the soil remains moist, but not over-watered. Plants can be thinned to 6” (15 cm) apart, or left to grow in clumps. Cilantro can be cut repeatedly for the greens, and then left to flower to produce the Coriander seed. The best planting companions for Cilantro are: beans, lettuce, cabbage, spinach, kale, basil. Do not plant Cilantro near carrots, and lavender. Cilantro usually germinates within 5-10 days (60-70ºF/15-21ºC)
