Plants grow to 5’ (150cm), producing a profusion of beautifully red-veined green leaves. Flowers are of superior beauty with creamy petals and a dark burgundy centre. Pods are a deep red developing full flavour at 2-3” (5-7.5cm), and remaining tender up to 8” (20cm) long. Pods even stay red when cooked! Highly ornamental in the garden and on the plate. Bonus: Greens, Flowers, and seeds are all edible! Some folks say the ground seed make a good substitute for coffee?!? I love Okra, and this is one of my favourites! Shows disease resistance. Matures in 50-60 days.(20 seeds/gram)
Tips for Growing Outstanding Okra! Okra is a tropical plant that loves heat and full sun. It is also a chameleon of sorts, readily adapting to different growing conditions, even within the same garden. Don’t be surprised if plants of the same variety are taller or shorter than each other. When the weather has sufficiently warmed (around the same time beans are planted), direct sow seeds ½”-1” (1-2.5cm) deep. Thin to 12” (30 cm) apart. The most suitable companion plants for Okra are; peppers and eggplant. Okra usually germinates within 10-21 days (70-95ºF/21-35ºC).
