Tante Alice (Green Slicing)

Heritage: Dorchester, Quebec

This is a wonderful French Canadian heirloom. Grown for many years by Alice Gosselin. It eventually made its way into seed swaps and personal collections across Canada. We obtained our seed from the first offering in Seeds of Diversity (Quebec), in the late 1990’s. We have been growing from the same original seed for the past 25 years.

Hardy plants can appear to be somewhat delicate, but have no fear. They will produce beautiful medium-dark green fruit up to 10-12” (25-30cm) long, and 2” (5cm) in diameter. Reminiscent of a stockier English variety, but with more seeds. Flesh is white, crisp, refreshing, and very easy to digest. Everything you want in a perfect slicing cucumber! Average yield, but excellent fruits – just be sure to plant more plants than required for other varieties. We were especially proud a few years ago when our Tante Alice won 1st place out of 11 cucumber entries, beating all other hybrid and chemically fertilized cucumber varieties, at the local fall fair! Needless to say, this is one of our family favourites! Shows disease resistance. Matures in 60-70 days. (35 seeds/g)

Tips for Growing Captivating Cucumbers! Cucumbers love warm weather and need full sun for optimum production. It is best to start the seed indoors planted 1” (2.5cm) deep in small pots, 3-4 weeks before the last frost. When the soil has warmed transplant in the garden spacing at least 12” (30cm) apart preferably in hills (12” tall, 24” across). Alternatively, cucumbers can be direct-seeded in warm soil, or earlier with row covers, with equally good or better results. Ensure they are well-watered and mulched throughout the growing season. Good planting companions are; corn, beans, and sunflowers. Cucumbers usually germinate within 5-10 days (75-95ºF/24-35ºC).
