Cream of Saskatchewan

Heritage: Russia, Saskatchewan

Brought to Canada by Russian immigrants in the late 1890’s, this little watermelon thrived in the prairies climate making Canada its home.

Delicate, roaming vines produce beautiful medium-sized, round fruit weighing up to 8 lbs (3.6kg). Skin is a lightly mottled green with dark striping. Milky white flesh is fine grained and oh so very juicy and sweet! It literally sparkles in your mouth. Just like any older variety, there are plenty of seeds. Note: Careful when picking, and do not tap on a cool morning. Skin is brittle and will crack right open! Excellent producer in most climates, especially cooler ones! This is one of our favourites! (expect for Grandpa of course, who won’t even give it watermelon status unless the flesh is red) Matures in 80-90 days. (18 seeds/g)

*Taste Quality* For most Watermelons, once picked they should be left to rest on your kitchen counter for a week before cutting. The absence from the vine signals the fruit to finish turning its carbohydrates into sugar!

Tips for Growing Wonderful Watermelons! Watermelons love heat and full sun. They can be started indoors at least 3 weeks prior to plant date. We prefer to direct seed, where they do equally well, and most times better if the season is long enough. Sow seed 3/4” (2cm) deep in warm, well fertilized soil. Plant 2-3 seedlings on mounds 36” (90cm) apart. Mulch heavily with straw so that the fruit will be cushioned against the soil. The most suitable companion plant for Watermelon is; potatoes. Who knew – potatoes have very few botanical friends! Watermelon seed usually germinates within 5-7 days (85-95ºF/29-35ºC).
