Tips for Growing Charming Chives! Chives loves well-drained soil and full sun. After the danger of frost has passed, plant 4-6 seeds ¼” (6mm) deep, in clumps. Gently cover with soil and tamp/press down so that the seeds are in contact with the earth. Lightly water, ensuring the soil remains moist, but not over-watered. Thin clumps to 8” (20cm) apart. Start harvesting when stems reach 8” (20cm). Leave 1” (2.5cm) of green stem at the bottom for continuous re-growth. The best planting companions for Chives are: tomatoes, carrots, broccoli, eggplant, peppers, and squash. Do not plant Chives near beans, peas, or spinach. Chives usually germinates within 7-21 days (60-70ºF/15-21ºC)
