New Zealand Spinach (Tetragoniaceae)
Heritage: New Zealand
Not really a spinach at all, New Zealand Spinach is the sole member of the Latin botanical family Tetragoniaceae. First discovered in New Zealand by Sir Joseph Banks in the early 1770’s, it was later also found growing in Chile, and Argentina.
Each plant produces a fantastic amount of arrowhead-shaped leaves on 24” (60cm) vines that can be trellised to save space. The leaves are a glorious green, crisp, juicy, and delicious. If you love spinach but get discouraged racing to eat it before it all goes to seed, then this is a dream come true! New Zealand spinach is a heat loving plant that produces green leaves all season long. It cannot tolerate frost, however, we have discovered that it does self-seed overwinter in Ontario! Who would have thought! Really easy to grow. Highly recommended! Be patient, slow to germinate. Shows disease resistance. Matures in 45-55 days. (15 seeds/g)
Tips for Growing New Zealand Spinach: Direct seed outdoors in full sun to 1/2” (1cm) deep, thinning to 18” (45cm) apart. New Zealand Spinach usually germinates within 14-28 days (80-90ºF/27-32ºC). Note: Careful how many you plant. It can become quite aggressive once it gets going!
