Scandinavian Dill (Annual)

Heritage: Denmark, Sweden

Developed in Denmark primarily for use with seafood. Appearing in North America sometime in the early 1800’s. Years ago we were fortunate to receive our seed from a farmer living in Grumstrup, Denmark. We have been growing this variety ever since.

Tall dramatic plants grow to 30″ (75cm) high. The luxurious leaf fronds are dark green in colour and look like angel-hair blowing in the wind. Flavour is bright and strong, but not overpowering. The dill crown (flower head) is exceptionally large and beautiful – we put them in a vase on our kitchen counter! Easy to grow. Big attraction for bees when in bloom. Excellent both as a fresh cut green foliage and seed for pickling. This variety is a good companion plant beside cabbage for mutual vitality. One of our Favourites! (640 seeds/g)

Tips for Growing Divine Dill!  Dill thrives best in fertile, moist soil with sun in the morning and cool shade during hot afternoons. Seeds are best planted directly into the soil once the danger of frost has passed, and the soil is warm. Seeds can be sprinkled, or individually planted up to 1cm deep. Cover with soil no more than ¼” (6mm) deep and gently tamp/press down so that the seeds are in contact with the earth. Lightly water, ensuring the soil remains moist, but not over-watered. Plants can be thinned to 6” (15 cm) apart, or left to grow in clumps. Dill can be cut repeatedly for the greens. The best planting companions for Dill are: corn, broccoli, cucumber, lettuce, onions, cabbage. Do not plant Dill near carrots, and tomatoes. Dill usually germinates within 10-21 days (60-70ºF/15-21ºC)
