Crimson Sweet

Heritage: Manhattan, Kansas, USA

Developed in the early 1960’s by Dr. Charles Hall of Kansas State University, this variety was an All American Selection winner in 1964.

Vigorous vines produce a good crop of blocky, oblong fruit growing up to 12” (30cm) long, weighing between 20-30 lbs (9-13kg). Hard rind is light green accented with small dark green stripes. Fine textured flesh is sparkling red, whitening out towards the rind. Full of juice, with an excellent balance of sweetness and summer fresh flavour! Skin turns white-cream on the underside when ready for picking. Shows disease resistance. Widely adaptable to most climates. Matures in 90-100 days. (24 seeds/g)

*Taste Quality* For most Watermelons, once picked they should be left to rest on your kitchen counter for a week before cutting. The absence from the vine signals the fruit to finish turning its carbohydrates into sugar!

Tips for Growing Wonderful Watermelons! Watermelons love heat and full sun. They can be started indoors at least 3 weeks prior to plant date. We prefer to direct seed, where they do equally well, and most times better if the season is long enough. Sow seed 3/4” (2cm) deep in warm, well fertilized soil. Plant 2-3 seedlings on mounds 36” (90cm) apart. Mulch heavily with straw so that the fruit will be cushioned against the soil. The most suitable companion plant for Watermelon is; potatoes. Who knew – potatoes have very few botanical friends! Watermelon seed usually germinates within 5-7 days (85-95ºF/29-35ºC).
