Hearts of Gold

Heritage: Benton Harbor, Michigan, USA

This cantaloupe variety was developed by farmer Roland Morill in the late 1890’s. Introduced to North American seed catalogues shortly thereafter, Hearts of Gold became the most popular grown melon throughout the Midwestern United States by the early 1930’s.

Vigorous plants produce almost round fruit, 5-6” (13-15cm) in diameter, weighing up to 4lbs (1-2kg). Ribbed skin is dark green, with a beige-grey netting. The firm, aromatic salmon coloured flesh is refreshing, sweet, and juicy! Small-medium seed cavity, thicker flesh goodness. Reliable producer. Shows disease resistance. Matures in 80-90 days. (30 seeds/g)

*Taste Quality* For most Melons, once picked they should be left to rest on your kitchen counter for a week before cutting. The absence from the vine signals the fruit to finish turning its carbohydrates into sugar!

Tips for Growing Marvelous Melons! Melons love heat and full sun. It is best to start indoors at least 4 weeks prior to plant date. Alternatively, melons can also be direct seeded if the season is long enough. Sow seed 1/2” (1cm) deep in warm, well fertilized soil. Plant 2-3 seedlings in mounds 24” (60cm) apart. Mulch heavily with straw so that the fruit will be cushioned against the soil. The most suitable companion plants for Melons are; corn, sunflowers, and morning glory. Do not plant near potatoes. Melons usually germinate within 5-7 days (80-90ºF/27-32ºC).
